Boys and girls, ages 4 to 5, attend one of three pre-primary schools in the region FCAB serves. They attend school for five hours a day, five days per week, where they learn the Bangla, English and Arabic alphabet, words and rhymes. In math, students learn the numbers 1 through 20 in Bangla and English. As most of the children’s parents are illiterate, these skills are particularly important for the students to succeed in primary school.
Students are also taught important life habits, such as the importance of drinking water throughout the day. In 2023, 180 reusable water bottles were distributed to students in five pre-primary schools in five villages as part of FCAB’s “Save Water, Save a Life” project. In addition, children at the schools have access to safe and clean drinking water – free of iron, which is found in the local well water and can cause headaches, nausea, fatigue and black discoloration of teeth.
FCAB is currently working on supplying each boy and girl with a school uniform and backpack.
